The red-shirt protesters left the Royal Cliff hotel on Friday afternoon, less than an hour after breaking into the building, causing the cancellation of the Asean Summit and prompting Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to declare a state of emergency in Pattaya and Chonburi.
Asean leaders, including Mr Abhisit, were seen leaving the Royal Cliff Beach Resort, where an Asian summit was scheduled, by helicopters after the government announced the indefinite postponement of the summit.
The evacuation came after the protesters pushed aside soldiers at the glass entrance of a convention building where the press centre was located and forced their way inside the hotel.
Former Thai Rak Thai MP Arisman Pongruengrong said the red-shirts broke in because some of their members were injured in a clash with pro-government blue-shirts in the morning.
He claimed that the government was behind the blue-shirt movement, and that the government ordered them cause a conflict.
The government has repeatedly denied these claims.
